Letters of Hope

Bringing Humanity Back—One Letter at a Time

Letters of Hope is a Back2Life Project initiative that creates meaningful human connection between incarcerated individuals, veterans, and people in the community who want to offer encouragement, understanding, and hope.

A single letter can reduce isolation, restore dignity, and remind someone they are not forgotten. For many incarcerated individuals, receiving mail is more than correspondence—it’s a lifeline.

If you would like to add someone to Letters of Hope, there are two links at the bottom. You can download the application to send to your loved one OR you can add them to our site yourselves. Please be aware that the profile will not be live on the page until the fee is paid.

All money made on the site goes back into the nonprofit to continue our work!

Before You Write

Writing a letter to someone who is incarcerated can be incredibly meaningful — for both of you.

Because prison communication comes with unique rules and boundaries, we’ve created a short guide to help supporters write with respect, care, and safety in mind.

By participating in Letters of Hope, we strongly encourage you to review this guide before writing.

What Letters of Hope Is

Letters of Hope provides a safe, respectful space where incarcerated individuals and veterans may choose to share a short profile and receive supportive mail from the community.

  • Participation is voluntary

  • Profiles are posted for one year

  • Writers choose who they want to write to

  • Back2Life Project does not match pen pals or guarantee responses

The program is built on dignity, consent, and mutual respect.

How It Works

  1. Browse the Letters of Hope profiles below

  2. Choose someone you feel drawn to write

  3. Follow the communication guidelines provided

  4. Write with respect, kindness, and patience

That’s it. There is no pressure to write more than you’re able, and no expectation placed on either side.

Important Things to Know

  • Back2Life Project is not a dating service

  • We strongly encourage starting with friendship only

  • Do not send money, gifts, or financial support

  • Communication is subject to facility rules and monitoring

  • Responses may take time due to mailroom processing

Healthy connection depends on clarity and boundaries—for everyone involved.

Safety & Respect

Back2Life Project is committed to protecting both letter writers and incarcerated participants. While most correspondence is genuine and positive, all communication carries responsibility.

If you ever feel uncomfortable or unsure, trust your instincts and step back. You may also reach out to us for guidance or concerns.
