🔥 North Carolina NEEDS HB589 — The Second Look Act 🔥

HB589 has NOT passed — and it will NOT move forward without us.

House Bill 589 (The Second Look Act) would create a fair and structured path for individuals who have already spent years rehabilitating to request a sentence reduction. This is not automatic release — it is a full court review with strict requirements, evidence of rehabilitation, and a judge‑led hearing.

✅ Who qualifies?

• Served 10 years, or

• Served 50% of a sentence under 10 years

• Sentenced under NC’s structured sentencing laws

• Must NOT be a danger to anyone

• Must show rehabilitation, growth, and readiness

✅ Why HB589 matters:

✦ NC prisons are dangerously overcrowded and understaffed

✦ 1 in 3 incarcerated individuals is 55+ — low‑risk and medically expensive

✦ Research shows long sentences don’t reduce crime

✦ Rehabilitation should mean something

✦ Reuniting families strengthens communities and reduces recidivism
